There will or should be no repercussions if you did not operate (fly) the aircraft after the required inspection date. The only way the FAA would find out is if you told them, but before you do this file a NASA form they are available on line.

Second if the FAA did a record inspection and matched it up to your pilot logbook they may find it, but someone would really have to know what to look for.

Bottom line is yes it is a required inspection, however if the aircraft was not operated it can be out of date. Part 91 says the inspection is good until repeated or superceded and in this case it will be superceded by you current inspection.

If you are really concerned file a NASA form just to CYA at least that way you are covered.
