student pilot/private pilot

consider a student pilot that is able to solo...does anyone have an opinion of whether this student pilot could take another pilot with him and still be legal? the student would be left seat...as i see it, the student pilot by regulation is not able to have anyone but a cfi on board...true?

Fred: This is just my opinion. The answer is both yes and no. No, because a student pilot cannot carry passengers (except for a CFI). However, a private pilot can take anyone flying. So a private pilot could let the student sit in the left seat if he wanted. But, the private pilot would be pilot-in-command and responsible for everything that happen before, during, and after the flight.

Personally, I wouldn't do it even though I have flown from the right seat. However, I don't feel that I'm good enough to keep a student out of trouble. I'm not a CFI.

I have helped several students that were close to taking their practical. But I flew the plane while they worked on things such as navigation and radio work. When it comes to flying let the CFI go with them.

Mike.

First off, on the student pilot's certificate (his medical) it clearly states in bold letters "PASSENGER-CARRYING PROHIBITED". Second, letting a student take-off or land the airplane (unless you know him or her really well) is stupid unless you are an instructor. Third, just how many off us though have let someone who has never flown before fly an airplane when they are just a "passenger". And still, in a Cessna or Piper that is side-by-side seating, the student can do just as much from the right seat as the left, and it will probably benifit him or her later on in their flying career. However, in tandem seating aircraft (Citabria, Cub, Champ), it is probably best that the passenger/student sit up from where the PIC can see him or her at all times, just as long as the PIC is competent from the back seat.

The key to your question is simply this...Who is pilot-in-command?

If the student pilot is in command then he may not carry a passenger. If the private pilot is Pilot-in-command he may carry the student pilot. There is no regulation stating which seat the pilot-in-command must sit in. (as far as I know)

As far as logging the time with both pilots on board, the private pilot may log the flight time as PIC, and the student pilot can not log any time.
