Why is it so expensive?

Hi im new to the forum.

I am a private/instrument, and i havent flown in about 6-7 years.. I am just now "rekindling" and going back to flying.

I am absolutly SHOCKED to see what they want for rentals now.. What happened while i was gone!?!

I know they are blaming it on 9/11, but come on!

when i left flying, 100LL was $2.75/gal, now its $4.75 / gal...

so the gas cost of a C-172 (9 gal/hr) went from $25 to $42/hr.. thats only $17 more...

I USE to pay $69/hr wet for a 172, now its $125 here!

Instructors went from $25/hr to $45/hr!

you cant tell me costs increased THAT much.

Is it just because there are ALOT fewer students now, and they have to charge big bucks to cover rent and payroll?

no wonder there arent to many students, who can afford those rates!

My ratings would have cost $30K+ now.

One of the reasons im getting back into it, is my wife is interested in learning to fly, im thinking about just BUYING a 152 for her to train in, it will be alot cheaper than renting!

Along with the increased costs you mentioned, there is insurance which has doubled in price over the last few years and maintenance has gone way on up there, too.

A lot of schools have gone to SP's or Da20's too. The higher note on the plane results in higher cost to you. I think you are on the right track with buying a 150. See if you can find a 150 horse 150...youll have some fun with that one.
