Post Ratings-multi and commercial

Question my son has about his training and ratings:
Will the multi engine add on rating to a private instrument single airplane
satisfy the requirement of 10 hours complex time for the commercial single
engine license? How many check rides will be needed? Is there a better way
to achieve the Multi engine commercial instrument airplane license with
commercial single, in order to get the cfi license?
Any Answers will be appreicated. Thanks.

Look at FAR 61.45(a)(1)(i) and 61.63(c)(4) and the Commercial Pilot Practical Test Standards, FAA-S-8081-12A, (Rating Task Table) that states:

"1. If an applicant holds an AMEL rating, a complex airplane is not required for added ASEL rating."

The applicant may take the training and the practical test in a non-complex single engine airplane. Also look at the "Aircraft and Equipment Required for the Practical Test" stated in the Commercial Pilot Practical Test Standards, FAA-S-8081-12A, Introduction page 6, a complex airplane was required for the initial testing for the commercial certificate in an airplane. Demonstration in complex airplane is required only once for the initial issuance of the commercial airplane certificate and not necessary for class add-on. That is why the above stated note on the Rating Task Table is valid. If, for example the initial commercial certificate were obtained in a helicopter or glider, testing in a complex airplane would be required for an airplane add-on.

Also, in order to get instrument privileges for multiengine aircraft, the applicant must perform the instrument tasks for the Commercial multiengine checkride.

have him get his ASEL commercial, then do the Commercial-Instrument-Mulit add on. In one checkride he can have a multi-engine rating with commercial and instrument privlidges. If he gets the multi engine now, he will have to do a checkride again when he gets his commercial to prove comercial ability in a multi-engine airplane. Here is a map (in this order).

Private (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Instrument (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Commercial (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Multi-Inst-Comm add on - 1 checkride
4 checkrides

Your course of action
Private (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Instrument (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Mulit-Inst add on - 1 checkride
Commercial (ASEL) - 1 checkride
Multi-Comm add on - 1 checkride
5 checkrides
