Aircraft markings

Hi I'm a graphic design student. I'm interested in the history and genisis of plane identification. Not only the numerical protocol but also the colors and insignias planes wear -regardless of nationality. I'm having difficulty in finding books or websites on this topic.Can anyone direct me to information on this fascinating topic. Thank you all. DC
