mode s transponder

What exactly is a mode "s" transponder? What is the difference with the model "c"? Thanks a lot.

The basic idea behind a Mode S transponder is that is squawks a unique identifier for your airplane. Mode C simply relays a pressure to ATC that gets converted into altitude. From what I understand, Mode S is compatible with Mode C.
