Numbering Conventions

What are the numbering conventions used in assigning alpha-numeric identifiers (registration) to various aircraft? Is there a rhyme and/or reason to it?

There is no real system for assigning the N-numbers to aircraft, just whatever is available. The different campanies try to get a block of numbers that they can use during the manufacturing process.

Of you want a specific N-number, you can always check to see if it is available and request that it be reassigned to an airplane you own. There's one that I know of out here, N911KC, that belongs to the emergency services department of a specific county. They applied for that number when they found it was available and had it assigned to their aircraft.
