Aviators vs. pilots

Responding to the signature quote: "...And let's get one thing straight. There's a big difference between a pilot and an aviator. One is a technician; the other is an artist in love with flight."
-EB Jeppesen

I was raised in an aviation rich environment. My father was a Naval Aviator who flew everthing from Buffaloes to Skyraiders. My earliest memory was front seating in a J-3 with my father behind me. When I was six years old I referred to Dad as a Navy "pilot". It was then I learned the difference. Aviators fly aircraft for the Navy or Marine Corps; Pilots live in the bottom of water heaters or fly for the Air Force. Personally, I have the highest respect and regard for all armed forces aircrew. Their courage, professionalism, and self-sacrifice have made possible all we enjoy, and I thank them all equally for that.
