Cessna Model #'s

Can anyone tell me what the numbers mean for the model numbers Cessna uses. A friend said a 0 as in a 170 refers to this model being conventional gear.

Cessna model numbers were made simplay in the chronological order of the models and based on modifications. There are no special meanings to any given numbers, just a logical procession based on the basic airframe.

Your friend is a little off..

C-140, C-170, C-180, C-185 are conventional (tailwheel) aircraft

C-150, C-152, C-172, C-182 are tricycle (nosewheel) aircraft, except thethose with the RG designation, which means retractable gear.

In other words, there is no way to know for sure what type gear the aircraft has by looking at the last number of the type.
