ARROW

What does the acronym ARROW stand for in relation to the required aircraft certificates and documents that must be on board while flying solo?

ARROW stands for

A - Airworthiness certificate
R - Registration
R - Radio license (only need for international travel)
O - Pilots operating handbook (POH)
W - Weight and balance

As a student pilot, you must also carry your Student Pilot Certificate and logbook for endorsements.

PS your student pilot certificate is your medical certificate. You need your medical certificate on board with you when flying solo. PPS, the second R in ARROW can also be a second registration for the plane issued by your state. You may be in a state where both a federal and state registration is needed.

It is usually the case that these TWO documents (student pilot certificate and medical certificate) are on opposite sides of the same sheet of paper, but represent two documents.

Clarification:

A medical certificate can be issued without the student pilot certificate portion. Most people get both at the same time, but it is not necessary to do so. The student pilot certificate can be issued separately by the local FAA Flight Standards District Office, or by any pilot examiner (see FAR 61.85).
